Airtight building explained
An airtight building is a building in which unwanted air currents are prevented. Unwanted air that flows from outside to inside is infiltration. When air escapes from the insides out, it is called exfiltration. This is different than ventilation in a building. Ventilation means providing wanted fresh air to the inside of the building. This is mostly done with windows, doors, grids or an installation. Air leaks as a result of infiltration or exfiltration can cause energy loss or condensation problems. By providing an airtight seal on seams, cracks and surfaces, moisture problems can be prevented, living comfort can be improved and energy can be saved.
Start with an airtight construction
Creating an airtight building starts with the right airtight construction. Choosing the right materials is key in achieving airtightness in the end. Some materials are more airtight than others. The material determines to some extent which and how many airtight building solutions still need to be added after construction.
Minimize joints during airtight construction
If care is put into minimizing the joints between the wall, floor and roof, a complete airtight building is more easily achieved. Windows and doors are critical points as well. To create an airtight seal on these building details, it is important to start with an airtight construction with small joints and without cracks. As a building is always in movement, it is recommended to provide an airtight seal on all joints, cable work and details that could shrink or expand.
Create a durable airtight seal
To provide a durable airtight seal on all building details, the right airtight materials must be chosen. Materials such as conventional mastics might not provide a long-term airtight seal, as they can dry out or crack due to the low elasticity percentage. To create a long-lasting airtight building, an airtight seal can be made with our high-quality airtight sealant or airtight paint. These airtight building solutions have a high elasticity percentage and maintain this through the years. In this way, an airtight building is achieved.
